The Royal Pyramids of Meroe
in Archaeological Focus
a lecture by

In 2014, almost a century after George A. Reisner’s famous excavations of the Harvard–Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition, a new large-scale excavation began at one of the most well-known historic sites in Northern Sudan: the Royal Pyramids of Meroe.
During Reisner’s time the site was thoroughly excavated. Later, it was further explored by the German architect, Freidrich W. Hinkel, who documented many architectural details of the site as well as initiated a program to protect the pyramids.
Today, new technologies and documentation methods are allowing a team of international experts from the Qatari Mission for the Pyramids of Sudan, the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums, and the German Archaeological Institute to follow in Reisner and Hinkel’s footsteps to achieve results and insights that were never-before possible.
This lecture will report on the efforts and highlights of this recent work at Meroe, including the comprehensive documentation and conservation of the pyramid graves and their significance to further archaeological research.
